Catch me if you can:

The title sequence begins with music that sounds mysterious; which echoes the genre of the film. This element of mystery is kept up throughout the sequence as the animated man who seems to represent the main character spends the whole time of the opening sequence trying to hide possibly even disguise himself which creates an idea of he is attempting to stay away from another character by running.

Once the title begins there is the use of diegetic sound through the use of an ominous soundtrack. The effect of doing this implies of the genre of the film to the audience. It the opening sequence to “catch me if you can” it is done through cartoon, this focuses on one of the one person on the run form the police, after he gives them the slip he then changes costumes from pilot to a doctor and office worker through the camera focusing on this character the viewer makes that assumption that he is the main character. As the main character moves through the different scenes it becomes more apparent to the viewer that he is trying to evade another character in the clip.

This has a title sequence that is separately edited sequence from the rest of the film. This type of title sequence albeit different sets the theme/tone for the rest of the film. This sequence could consist of animation or live action, diegetic or non-diegetic music, a stationary image or special effects. This technique is used in films and television programs to establish the name of the film, cast, and director. This is used to set the tone of the program.

The Dark Knight rises:

The dark black mask and logo of batman gives hints to an investigation or mystery with a dark theme which has the codes and conventions of a psychological action thriller with great use of fear, mystery and paranoia this highlights key elements of the thriller genre to try confuse the viewer. This is revealed by the audience being introduced to the joker, who is the main protagonist; through a bank robbery scene. This displays to the audience that joker is a character that the audience should fear especially when he organizes his mob group to kill regular citizens and antagonise people. In one way or another this opening sequence accomplishes its aim to reinforcing

This scene is one of the most powerful movie openings and it foreshadows the chaos and tempo that will follow. There is a diegetic sound with a clock by amplifying the tickaticka then follows the musics. It’s common for action thrillers, Fast and Furious shops some feel like there’s a sound of drilling which with its sense of urgency speeds up the pace. The glass breaking adds to the feeling of chaos there is, yet as does the gunfire with sonic exaggeration so the sounds are emphasised in the audience’s hearing – no way that they could miss it. There’s screaming of people in the bank who realise that they may all be about to become hostages in a real life bank robbery, and they sound terrified – not at all ready.

Mise-En-Scene they are all wearing masks, clown masks – this is indicative of the Joker’s black sense of humour, as they all end up shooting each other on his command, because they are his clowns. They’d been saying he wouldn’t get a share himself, but now the joke’s on them because he is the Joker. They all have guns and are dangerous, legitimising the image of clowns in pop culture from childhood although intended to be for light-hearted entertainment having a strange quality about them that makes many children fear them to the point of phobia. They are more or less gossiping not fully focused on their job, relying too much on their guns and the element of surprise. The use of montage editing is very effective in this opening scene as it helps show different stages and perspectives of the heist. Inside the car, the use of lighting helps to build to the dark atmosphere as it is dimly lit to show the evilness of the clowns.

The over the shoulder shot of the clown in the back reveals a gun. Guns are connotations of death and this shows to the audience what is on the clowns agenda. The fact that he never speaks along with the diegetic click of the gun suggests that he has no emotions towards others and that he is more of an animal. The masks are effective as they disrupt the audience from seeing any of the characters emotions and helps to build to their profiles.

I, Robot:

In the start of the movie the song ‘Superstitious’ sets the theme and tone of the movie and introduces the character of Detective Spooner. The song ‘Superstitious’ was created in 1972 by Stevie Wonder. The song fits well with the characteristics of Detective Spooner. Detective spooner uses old technology such as 2004 converse shoes, an old bath. Spooner has had negative experiences with technology, this has led to him distrusting them and the people who rely on them.

The Three Laws:

We are introduced to The Three Laws that govern human/robot relations and a flashback/dream of a robot rescuing somebody.

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
  2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second law

The sound in the trailer is diegetic because it is visible on screen, the music in the trailer isn’t familiar but it an exotic music. The music’s purpose in the trailer is to build tension since the music’s speed increase so its in line with the tension. Also there is direct address because the characters are speaking to directly to the camera.

Parallel sound also follows because it complements the scene to the track and the scene the sound reflect each other. Exposition of character This image portrays danger to the audience because of the way he woke up sweating. Also the way he woke up made it seem that he has these dreams regularly which could actually be important. Furthermore as you can see In this picture you can analysis the fact that the girl her looks really frighten this could make the audience feel deeply sorry for her and give sympathy.

Casino Royale:

The main colours that are used are red, black, green and white. The red connotes blood and danger, which would suggest to the audience that this film might include lots of violence and death. The red is paired with the black often as in a pack of cards these are the two colours used. The first character to speak in the film is James Bond, which suggests to the audience that he is the main protagonist. He wears a black suit and white shirt that continues throughout the film to suggest his importance. Daniel Craig portrays the character of James Bond to be very relaxed and cool. He does this by answering using one word, very simple answers in a calm voice. He also uses dramatic pauses to add sense of tension for the audience.

One of the other characters in the first scene is wearing a Russian hat, which suggests to the audience that he is working for the “other side” connoting that he is a villain. However he is also very smartly dressed showing that he is of a high status. There is also a short fight scene at the beginning of the film. The character that James Bond is fighting is dressed in a messy shirt and trousers, which suggests that he is low status. Out of the three characters introduced, two of them are killed by James Bond therefore the audience realises that Bond has a lot of power. The cinematography used during this opening includes many different shot types and angles that help to identify the genre of action. To begin with a long shot is used to establish where the film will be set.

The tile of the movie, Casino Royale, also gives the audience a hint. The title sequence that they use at the beginning sets up a few of the themes that will be involved throughout the movie. The red connotes blood and danger, which would suggest to the audience that this film might include lots of violence and death. The red is paired with the black often as in a pack of cards these are the two colors used. The vector style graphics are very simple as blocks of colours are used however they are very effective and can include a lot of detail, James Bond if always shown in a black and white suit as this is his signature outfit. The bold colours that are used in the title sequence contrast to the black and white effect that was shown at the very beginning when we are introduced to James Bond.

There are many themes portrayed in this film. From the opening a theme of violence and aggression due to the fighting, use of guns and also the two deaths. You also get the theme of justice coming through because James Bond of always portrayed as the hero who tries to restore the justice. Another theme that we can identify is the theme of treason and betrayal. Overall I believe that the opening of Casino Royale sets up very clearly the main themes and narratives using cinematography, the title sequence, sound and lighting.
